Syllabus: Rock Soloing Freedom - Level 1

Week One:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on low E-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 1 of Em Pentatonic scale using note names.
  • Whole-step bends on G-string, B-string and high E-string.
  • Em Pentatonic licks 1, 2 and 3.
  • Musicianship exercise using whole-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using whole-notes.

Week Two:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on A-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 1 of Em Pentatonic scale using scale degrees.
  • Whole-step bends and releases on G-string, B-string and high E-string.
  • Using the picking-hand to stop unwanted string noise.
  • Em Pentatonic licks 4, 5 and 6.
  • Musicianship exercise using half-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using half-notes.

 Week Three:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on D-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 1 of Em Pentatonic scale using both note names and scale degrees.
  • Essential two note pentatonic licks 1 and 2.
  • How to perform hammer-ons correctly.
  • Six exercises to develop hammer-on technique.
  • Musicianship exercise using quarter-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using quarter-notes.

Week Four:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on G-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 2 of Em Pentatonic scale using note names.
  • Musician exercise using one half-note followed by two quarter-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using one half-note followed by two quarter-notes.
  • Practice workshop.

 Week Five:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on B-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 2 of Em Pentatonic scale using scale degrees.
  • Type 1 and Type 2 unison bends.
  • How to perform pull-offs correctly.
  • Six exercises to develop pull-off technique. 
  • Em Pentatonic licks 7 and 8.
  • Musicianship exercise using two quarter-notes followed by one half-note.
  • Improvisation exercise using two quarter-notes followed by one half-note.

 Week Six:

  • Memorizing Em Pentatonic scale on the high E-string.
  • Memorizing fingering 2 of Em Pentatonic scale using both note names and scale degrees.

  • Musicianship exercise using one quarter-note, followed by one half-note, followed by one quarter-note.

  Week Seven:

  • Review of all six strings of Em Pentatonic scale.
  • Memorizing fingering 5 of Em Pentatonic scale using note names.
  • Double-stop bends 1 and 2.
  • Picked slides and legato slides.
  • Exercise to develop legato sliding technique.
  • Em Pentatonic Licks 9 and 10.
  • Musicianship exercise using two quarter-notes followed by four eighth-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using two quarter-notes followed by four eighth-notes.

 Week Eight:

  • Memorizing fingering 5 of Em Pentatonic scale using scale degrees.
  • Essential two note pentatonic licks 5 and 6.
  • Musicianship exercise using four eighth-notes followed by two quarter-notes.
  • Improvisation exercise using four eighth-notes followed by two quarter-notes.

 Week Nine:

  • Memorizing fingering 5 of Em Pentatonic scale using both note names and scale degrees.
  • Essential three note pentatonic licks 1 and 2.
  • Essential four note pentatonic lick 1.
  • Applying unison bends to Em Pentatonic scale.
  • Musicianship exercise that involves playing Em Pentatonic lick 4 with a new rhythm.
  • Improvisation exercise that involves improvising with Em Pentatonic Lick 4 using different rhythms.

 Week Ten:

  • Reviewing fingerings 1, 2 and 5 of Em Pentatonic scale.
  • Review of all nine essential licks covered in this training program.
  • Four step process for creating new licks from the essential licks.
  • The Chromatic Practice Technique.
  • Vibrato on unbent notes.
  • Vibrato exercise 1.
  • Playing an example lick with different timings.
  • Improvising with the example lick.
  • Wrap up and a few recommendations.
